Van Tsze Fu | 2015 –

WORKPLAN | 2015 September

SUMMARY | 2015 December

TEACHERS' EVALUATIONS | 2015 December

Lőrinc Katalin: I never really know, how much you understand of what I’m saying, – and it is also a question for me, that when you don’t, it is because you are dreaming (not listening) or because you don’t understand my English. But the main thing:  you are an energy-bombe, and please stay like this, because this is the main ingredient in dance! It is great! But of course, you must work on refining: you should  soften sometime, to be strong also when the movement is slow!! (For example: your jump is fantastique, but a simple, slow back-strech should be much stronger, longer and deeper in order to lenghten you body.)  Power  is not always a question of muscular virtuosity, but it can be present in a calm and deep strech…)

Hód Adrienn: these materials we work with are not so familiar for you but I saw you, from day to day, going into improvisation tasks more bravely and with joy. You did not miss any class so I saw you building up experiences and enjoying the unknown field.

Szonda Fanni: you are amazing! I really like people who have a purpose to learn something well and who are able to do it too, and you are one of them. You are the most hardworking pianist here in my class. Keep on doing this way! J

Marco Torrice: fast mind, silent and really sensitive, he has a natural body intelligence, which make him really agile and fast learning. I encourage him to focus more on the unnecessary tension or unnecessary use of muscle, and on the connection between one movement and the next. He is definitely an active worker and I would remind him to think that sometime is not about “doing something” but more about “not to do something”, which may obstruct the potential of anatomical and physical principles to support our dancing.

Kováts Tibor: Vitya is a great man. He understands everything easily and  he can execute it well right away. Being a boy, of course he has to work on his artistic performance. He has very good instinct for ballet. His jumping and rotation skills are very good, he is sufficiently flexible, and he has loose joints. It is very good to work with him.

Pándy Gabriella: English, Hungarian, Russian and Chinese…This special language environment gives you a great opportunity to use English as a primary means of communication, which you really seem to make use of.  You can make yourself understood efficiently and you have built strong listening skills. However, you really need  your regular and active learning practice that  you tried so hard to keep on at the beginning of the term. Do not give up reading and writing in English. Besides, you should rely on English – English monolingual dictionaries when learning new vocabulary. Let translation be the final step in the learning process.  Such a self-sufficient learner like you can  make it I am sure. Also, as a visual type, it is also very important to practise writing more. (Scrapbook is aimed to keep your regular notes in it…)

WORKPLAN | 2016 January

SUMMARY | 2016 June

This school year, I received a lot of knowledge and practices. This greatly influenced my attitude to dance. I really like the method of teaching, each teacher has an own method and since everyone has a different one, I can take from each of them a little and create something of my own, that is creative and it is something I just worked and work hard.

Throughout the academic year, 80% felt good, and positive, but there are times that I am very tired, headache, feeling sleepy …

And when the director conflicts with other students, I also fall into depression, and it seems to me that all feel awkward and not well after the conflict. And then we all do not have the mood to continue working. But all in all I felt very happy, I see that I rise!

The first six months I was feeling not very good! Because being homesick, because my English and it was hard to communicate with other students, not everybody always fully understand. And now I have learned, in principle! And it's easy with all the talk, and I am pleased in this atmosphere is colorful when everyone is smiling, dancing, enjoy!

Sometimes I wonder very much about what Ivan (Director) said to me.

It sounds to me rude but I think that it's all true (when he finds faults with small details in movements, words, emotions …)

About folk dances.

I really like our teacher Sessi!

She always knows and understands what we must and what we need. And I always feel very well on her exercises. We have worked very hard over the coordination, rhythm (feel), and it helps a lot. I feel a big improvement in the national dance! And I enjoy folk dancing very much!

I believe that, I have to concentrate more in others words, and should be responsible to the duties entrusted to us.

TEACHERS' EVALUATIONS | 2016 June

Kováts Tibor: Vitya still has been performing well, although his concentration was not on a top level in the whole semester. In my opinion, this is acceptable in case of a boy. He is a student who would be able to work three times harder, so this is why it is sad that some other students in the group could not improve enough. We had to slow down for the sake of them, and this caused lots of wasting of time for Vitya. Thanks for him for the work!

About the group: In the second semester I managed to get know the personalities, strenghts and weaknesses of the students. Their professional performance was not well balanced, in other words their accomplishments varied a lot. Only a few of them is capable to acquire all what they were taught, therefore the exercises and the steps have to be repeated again and again. We carried out much less than I had planned to. The group is split into two parts: some students improved permanently and consistently, while the others did not. The latter mentioned ones obstructed those who were motivated and focused, because we could not dictate the same tempo for all; in contrary, we had to re-start and always repeat the same class materials.

Mészáros Máté, Horváth Nóra: You are on the good way, keep on working. You have to work on your sensibility when you work with other people not to over power them.

Szemessy Kinga: Satisfactory
According to you, I am a little bit disappointed, Vitya. None of my evaluations was made only by the quality of your performance, but by the will and endeavour you all bring to the classes. Your motivation is on a very low level, and I believe that is not (only) my fault. I know that the language is a barrier for you, but we should face with the fact that you did not go to see any shows and therefore you somehow chose to deny realizing your essay homework. Your micro-presentation about Countertechnique also did not make me convinced that you are conscious about what you are expected to do, even if I had asked you several times whether you need extra help. This will not be smoother with the years as you are required to submit a thesis at the end of the last semester of your BA studies. I am here teaching you for the sake of contextualizing, inspiring your creative work and also for preparing you to write that future thesis. You need to invest three times more energy and if so, you will receive all the aid you request for. I have not yet given it up, and hope neither you have done.

Sessi Krisztina: Vitya, very good body. Also at the same time I feel you are lazy sometimes. You can do most of the times everything for the first time, but that doesn’t mean that you have to be bored. Try to keep your working level. You are very strong and you are capable to jump high and your sense of rythm is really good, but you have to keep working on this and not to be satisfied with your values. In the improvisations or homeworks I feel you started to dance, and not only execite the exercises.  Keep working on this!

Szonda Fanni: Thank you for all your hard work throughout the year! You know that I am so proud of you! You have decided at the beginning of the year that you will learn to play the piano and now you can play the piano very well. I am happy to see how much you love playing the piano. And it is good to see that you work more on the piece after you have learned all the notes. Now this is art. I really like that you let your music breathe by giving time of your playing the piano throughout the piece.

WORKPLAN | 2016 September

TEACHERS' EVALUATIONS | 2016 December

Bakó Tamás:
Dear Viktor!
I appreciated that you attempt to make space for new experiences more and more. My impression was that you look for the opportunities to understand the work from a larger perspective, allowing yourself of making new observations. However there is still place for development in there. Although you challenged yourself in new ways, sometimes you seem to loose interest. Take your time and go on with researching the potential of new approaches of the study and use of the body. Carry on!

Szonda Fanni: One of the main aim of a teacher is to be invisible and unnecessary. You are on the good track to reach this. I am so happy that you are very substantive and you can surprise me with a brand-new piece for class by class… I think you are very talented, diligent and reliable. That’s the reason why I offer you one more chamber partner to play together. I think these pieces will mean a lot of fun for everybody! Thank you for your work!

Vitya has a worse mood at my classes comparing the previous semester; he is not as cheerful as he was last year. One of the reasons behind this could be the fact that we returned to the basics. I think Vitya does not feel the necessity behind it, or even considers it as a step back. In a way it makes sense, because he is very good in learning new steps and movements. However, he must understand that the refinement and elegance of movements is as important as the spectacular, acrobatic jumps and turns! He is a little bit lazy and impatient to realise this duality, and to create it within one step. In the next semester he may and should work on this!

Cseri Péter: General notes to all 2016 autumn students and now to the individual material:
Vitya You have got to find a way out of your routine. You need attention at your level but no one is able to give you indefinitely. Find a way to get excited about your dancing. Your abilities are there now you are gonna have to develop. You can! Do you want to? I know I gave you a lot of help but I have the feeling that it is still taking too long for you to work with what you get from me. You can not anymore tell yourself that you do not speak English. That is not the case. Stop hiding and get out there and show how great you are!

Szemessy Kinga: General notes: Comparing to what we are used to with and what facilities we have, this was quite an extraordinary class setting with 17 students participating. In some occasions it caused very exciting roundtable conversations unfolding how differently we perceive the same problems, while other times we could just barely keep the energies together and giving space for everyone’s ideas. However, even if in this kind of setting it is easy to disappear, in general I did not experience this attempt from the students’ side. We dived into notions and theories around “naturalness”, “freedom” and “self”, and studied about various dance practitioners who were investigating these terms in the 20th century. Except some cases, the quality of the presentations were either appropriate or high, and the essays show nice results as well. I’d call it a good start for the newcomers, and a worth-while and in-depth revisiting of materials with those we had class last semester.

To be honest, Vitya, last year I thought you were struggling with language barriers, but this year I simply find you lazy and someone satisfied with average quality (comparing to his own potentials). There are tones of visual materials added to the Dance Studies class in order to help you – and of course some others – engaging, but even if I offered my help in several occasions, your input effort is close to zero. You had not spend enough time to prepare for the presentation, however by telling us those few sentences about somatics and CI you proved you are capable doing so. You think you are not disturbing, but your ignorance and occasional in-class text messaging is often destructive (at least for my teaching). There is a point which over I cannot motivate you, but you must find a reason how to spend your time in a meaningful way.

Grade: Satisfactory

Pándy Gabi: I hope you enjoy this year’s English group, Vitya, with really cool partners to communicate with.  However, when the focus is on grammar, vocabulary or writing skills, you often seem to skip information. You still seem to pretend to understand, when you don’t, to be done when you aren’t.  You can easily be distracted and sometimes you don’t even realize when you are still working on the same problem that has just been solved by somebody else… On the other hand, you are so quick on the uptake, that when you are focusing, you are often the first to be able to apply a new language element or structure. What a shame that you forget much of it for next time with no homework at all! I bet you could do about 200% more of you if you did regular writing or reading practice. …

Angelus Iván: Dear Vitya! Dear Mother, dear Sister!
Vitya is at the middle of his studies in Budapest. He is the same strong boy, with spectacular acrobatic moves, he visited many classes of practice and theory.
I must warn you that the rhytm of his progression doens't seem to be enough for a succesful dancer's carrier.

He didn't improve his understanding of tasks. We often do not know if doesn't understand or he doesn't want to understand his mates and teachers helpful communication. He is mostly late with deadlines, even after being warned about them. His performance at technical classes is changing. He doesn't pracice enough. His creativity didn't develop too much. The motivation, diligence, persistence is not enough to become a succesful, creative contemporary dancer, or even a succesful dancer.

He still has 3 semesters, one year and a half. That is enough to gater successes based on his great physical potentials, but he has to work MUCH MORE hard.
His mentor, teachers, mates, me – we are all open to help him when he asks for help.
We can't do more without him. His future in his hand only !!!

MENTOR'S SUMMARY | 2017 January

Bakó Tamás: Looking at the evaluations of the last period I hear a strong emergency call from your teachers! Beside the many positive feedbacks which are related to your physical and intellectual potentials and working/learning abilities, you are warned about being lazy, choosy, less motivated, captured by routine, hiding, not paying enough attention and not investing enough energy into work.

You are a gifted person with remarkable qualities and potentials. It is highly appreciated and supported by the people here, they care for you and willing to help in anything you'd need.

But it looks like that you have arrived to a point where these qualities won't move you further, unless you challenge yourself to be more independent, diligent and reliable (as in the piano classes), curios and keen about the daily practice (as you related lately to CI) and at the same time the larger context of dance/contemporary dance. As Iván says in his letter you are in half way, so there's time to achieve the necessary rhythm of appropriate progression and pursue your future/professional aims!

I would encourage you to gain more knowledge about dance generally and the field of contemporary dance to obtain clarity about your own vision of being a dancer, to clarify what is that you want exactly from dance. If your goals are much more related to the reality of the dance today and it's future it might help you to be inspired about your present work!

Best!

WORKPLAN | 2017 January

7th January

Google translation:

This semester, I'm going back to work on his psyche and development. Most of all I want to work on concentration, that at a time could concentrate in two, even three things. What would be generated coordination and sensitivity …

With the body as usual, I want to continue with my method of self-development! Catching on as quickly as possible. And to work with these information as I am comfortable and uncomfortable, too, to look for other outlets and opportunities.

Ballet,
This semester, I want to tear the strong muscles! I want to go beyond its capabilities! I believe and I see that I'm stuck. And he could not find a way out! Therefore, I decided that I will diligently sits on twine, pulling up legs, muscle tear …
I think the only way I will have development in the ballet

Folk dances,
I will continue at the same pace, I believe that now is the thing that I need for me! Regular training

Piano,
I have nothing to say really. Only practice !!! And keep pace, like a metronome.

SUMMARY | 2017 June

This semester was hard for me, In everything. Concentration, classes, rehearsals, communication with people, energy… everything were on the middle or low level. The problem is that to many thing at the same time, I couldn't find a perfect time to resolve it and it made a bit stressful, mentally tiredness. Usually my energy is always depend on my mood, or the others people relation, behavior and energy. For me it's important to be together! It feels more safe. And I'm actually easily can be taken from the others people mood, I'll partner them automatically(I'm fighting with that usually). At one point it's a good training, to be alone and just trust yourself, I shouldn't be always partner others and they should partner me! So… for me it was good experience to work with that and see the other possibilities to solve.

Ballet

This year with Tibor was really balanced, sometimes it's hard sometimes it's feels very good. I really appreciate Tibor's requirements and corrections for me, i think I need this kind of pushing! Otherwise I don't know if it's correct on not, but sometimes I tried to push myself to the limit point, to train muscles and see my limits! I think for my it's the best to, develop. But in general, Tibor's energy is always push me up, into the good mood. And I have wish to do ballet

Folk dance

In folk dance I feel that I developed a lot! Now I'm really trying to get into it, to this Hungarian national folk dance, Now I don't really have problem with the rhythm, I can easily catch it with music. The technique is getting much more better, lighter…

I hope I'm going on the good direction.

And I really appreciate Batyu's energy, which he is coming into the class.

Piano

It's a bit complicated, because I didn't really have time to practice enough! And on the class I with Funny had to start from the beginning. I really enjoy the class! It is always like meditation for me, to relax and play the favorite music and atmosphere is always calm, I can really open my mind there(on the class)

TEACHERS' EVALUATIONS | 2017 June

Várnagy Kristóf: You are getting satiated way to fast. I don`t mean by the amount of yout efforts, but deffinitely by your capacity. You are very fast at getting things, but as well you have the tendency to stay on the surface. I feel you judge too early and it doesn`t allow you to delve into things that you would benefit from otherways.

Szemessy Kinga: Did you try hard, Vitya? I have not been convinced by the lack of language knowledge excuse anymore. I know you put full energy in issues and tasks that you like, but easily neglect those you are not that much into. In your point of view, will this behaviour beneficial in the future? At this stage of your life and career, I’d encourage you to be challenged by searching for interest in all the things that you decided not having anything to do with.

Szonda Fanni: I have big plans with you for the next year. More classical music, less „pop” music. As always I still like working with you, because if you decided something you can fight for that, doesn’t matter how hard it is, you can do that too. I love this attitude.

Szegedy-Maszák Zsuzsanna: Van Tsze Fu’s short essay on Joseph Karl Stieler’s painting of Beethoven demonstrated that he is creative and interested, but he needs to work a bit on his writing skills. His interest is earnest, but he should have devoted a bit more time to the course. I wish him well in his future artistic pursuits.
