Hofbauer Réka

WORKPLAN | 2022/23 1st Period

My short-term plans

Individual warm-up and individual work

Verbalising movement
-finding the proper words of particular qualities, senses, moves of the body
-explaining the idea behind this practice /images, helps the learning process/
-working on both

Hungarian and English languages Anatomy
-as it is the theoretical base of the first period
-I aim to connect my movements with the gotten knowledge /for example within the verbalising tasks/

Techniques
Back to the basics -strengthening the basics of movement language and the use of the body /overwriting habits/

During the first period of the year, I would like to concentrate on the very basics of movement and dance. Supporting the development of my dance technique, I am going to “back to the basics”, and learn/pay attention to things as it would be the very first time I have ever tried them. I aim to skip habits and get a stronger basis of movement.

I am aiming to evolve the way how I am using languages, both Hungarian and English, to describe the movement, sensations in the body and qualities. This practice includes the use of Anatomy knowledge and Ballet terminology, but at the same time, it focuses on automating the description of movement during a dance. I hope, this practice would cause a more focused presence and constant observation of myself during a dance. The idea behind it is that I think language and the images and senses they are causing in the mind can significantly manipulate the moves of the body. I experienced many times in different classes how getting a detailed explanation affects me as a student. I think if I can verbalise my moves they might become more conscious. With this practice, I would like to learn properly describe the improvisation tasks and fixed material I am creating for this learning process. I am going to start the work with two methods of connecting verbality with movement.

1. During free improvisation constant talking about the experiences
2. Improvisational tasks (about current interests) + free writing after each session

My long-term plans

After my studies, I would like to teach dance, because I am smitten with the effects of dance on people. I think, with movement and with the use of the body, we can start to live a completely different quality of life, knowing ourselves better and better, evolving our self-consciousness and letting ourselves connect with others more easily. In my opinion, the first step toward proper self-awareness can be the cognition of our bodies. In addition, one of my favourite aspects of learning dance is that it demands and also upgrades patience.  Besides, I would like to perform. Even though, perhaps I am more interested in experiencing different creation processes than in the actual presentation.   According to my plans, this paper is going to be a periodically updated guide to my studies.

CREATIVE PLAN | 2022/23 1st Period

In my creative process, I am working on how to create a two-minute-long contemporary dance choreography, inspired by the aesthetics of Tai Chi movement material. I am analysing the following video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2W605JFCTU&t=214s), according to the use of space, sequence structure and changes in dynamics through the first two weeks of Period 1. Then, according to the observed characteristics I am experimenting with improvisational tasks in the third and fourth weeks. The fifth and sixth weeks of the process are the time of fixing the found material, then I plan to spend the last week practising in the actual space solving the arising problems.

SUMMARY | 2022/23 1st Period

Work plan

As I intended at the very beginning of the year, I would spend one individual class per week working on my work plan tasks. Maybe in the first two-three weeks, I did, but then, with all the other materials and focus points I started skipping these occasions. In my work plan I did not define a goal, but a journey with a specific method. So I would not say, that it failed, something started that I would certainly like to develop and deepen in the future. For example, and I think it is strongly connected to my pleasure of movement verbalisation, is the working method I have found during the rehearsals of my solo choreography, the diary writing about improvisational tasks and using these writings in building the actual piece. I have read some papers concerning the topic, but I could not manage to find space and I was not conscious enough to include these, developing this work any further.

Creative plan

In the case of my creative plan, I am more dissatisfied. I feel that I did not dive into the topic as I have should, or maybe the topic was not the right alternative. Anyways, I wish I would produce a much more deepened and focused creative process. Perhaps, affected by the above-mentioned dissatisfaction, I could not manage my time functionally. And I did not feel when I should start to close the topic and give the final form of it. I ended up with smaller, individual sections of movement material which I found very difficult to shape afterwards. So in the future, I would like to avoid remaining with a fixed material too early but somehow give the freedom of change and development to the material. Besides, during rehearsals, I tried many things, qualities, and solutions and in the actual choreography, I did not show an integral part of it. So I think I need to somehow develop in this selection process when I tend to select important parts of the idea and the work, showing a simplified version of the whole image.

TEACHERS’ EVALUATIONS | 2022/23 1st Period

Bakó Tamás – contemporary dance

You did excellent work in the classes. I perceived that throughout the period you kept being open and curious to learn, explore and rediscover. Your dance has a history but your objectives about broadening your knowledge and having a wider foundation of your dance practice gives you the opportunity to learn more about your abilities, potentials, present and future self. The logic and material of the class is open to you. Movements and structure, coordination and functionality are widely grasped and intelligently organized.. At the beginning of the period it felt that you needed some time to arrive but as we moved along you permitted more trust towards yourself and ease in the work. That gave you the space to listen to yourself and made you more confident in your practice. Great work, keep on going!

Furulyás Dóra – improvisation

General notes to the group:

Generally it was very joyful working with you as a group. I enjoyed each of the classes, I felt that we understood each other, we were available and responsive to work and develop understanding the different states with which we were facing each class as human beings. You are taking care of yourselves and each other, and you are open to your peers and to me. This was a great environment in which we could together start a journey of navigating in improvisative dances, situations using the space around us.

Personal notes:

Állandó értő figyelmeddel mindig számíthattam a munkádra és a jelenidejű részvételedre. Tendenciózusan önmagadnakidőt hagyva mész bele a feladatokba. Látom, hogy érteni akarod a testedet mozgás közben, erős a belső figyelmed. Ugyanakkor szívesen, kíváncsian kapcsolódsz mások mozgásához is. Bátorítalak a dőlésekkel, érkezésekkel, irányváltásokkal való kísérletezésre.

Kulcsár Vajda Enikő – Body

General notes to the group:

Personal notes:

Magas szintű figyelem, erős jelenlét, a fizikai erő és a kifinomult testhasználat megfelelő aránya. Remek úton vagy!

Újvári Milán – Body work

General notes to the group:

Ennek egyik lehetséges megoldása a tudásmegosztásban rejlő lehetőségek. A csoport minden tagjával egyéni konzultációt szeretnék tartani a pedagógusi összefoglaló kiegészítése, árnyalása érdekében. Ezzel kapcsolatban kérek időpontokat mindenkitől! Késő délután, este, lenne nekem jó. Köszönöm !?

Personal notes:

Amennyiben igényled, beszéljünk személyesen is!?

Várnagy Kristóf – Ballet

General notes to the group:

Dear students! It is very early days and I have only met you yet specifically at the beginning of the first stage of the process. Therefore, I feel it is premature for me to go into too much detail, but I would rather write about the positive experience that the group has given me and the promising perspective that this community holds. I hope that the initial enthusiasm, perhaps a little naïve in places, will be replaced not by fatigue but by determination and a sense of purpose. All the signs are that the team is developing in this direction, which fills me with great happiness and hope. Keep up the good work!

Personal notes:

Elsősorban most a térbeli elmozdulásokra gondolok, hogy hogyan tudsz gazdagabb interakcióba lépni a térrel magad körül.

WORKPLAN | 2022/23 2nd Period

My short-term plans

In the second period, I would like to partly stick to my Period 1-plan about movement verbalisation and continue the work with the methods I have introduced within my previous work plan. I am still planning to spend some time in individual work sessions with this interest.

Breathing
In addition, I would like to develop the way I use breathing when I am moving. I would like to pay more attention to this aspect during all the classes and practices.

Strengthening
I have two main focuses for strengthening this period. I am planning to work on core stability with the pilates exercises we have learnt in Enikő’s body classes. Besides, I would like to work on my foot muscles to improve the quality of my jumps, and how I am using the floor in general.

Rehearsals
Building and keeping better time management. Trying to deepen into the main idea instead of widening my interest. Improvisation Experimenting with changes in dynamics, levels and directions. Surprise myself.

My long-term plans

After my studies, I would like to teach dance, because I am impressed with the effects of dance on people.

SUMMARY | 2022/23 2nd Period

My work plan was not too packed because I knew this will be a very tight period, so I did not want to make too unrealistic plans. Fortunately in the different classes, we have touched almost every element of my work plan. Breathing, time management within the creation process and improvisation. We paid attention to breathing from different points of view and Dóra’s repeated improvisational class structure helped me to start to review my improvisational habits. About the importance of creating something and working on a performance: In general, my focus is mostly on my technical development. But here, I really could engage with the creative processes. All of the choreographies were important and I constantly cared about them. I have had something more important than the technical development that caused a release and development, as I felt. Joe & Blanka Shifting roots I have found something in AML that feels very close to me. And I think this aspect could somehow bring me closer to more structured dance techniques (which used to be difficult to deal with), and find the light, joyful part of them. Here, I have found something and I think the learnt exercises and techniques could help me with deepening and perfecting the basic common elements of similar-based techniques. Nézlek It was much more challenging to choreograph and to be a performer at the same time as I expected. Also, as a performer, I like when the instructions and my image about the choreography can be as clear as possible. But as I could not see the work from the outside this image of what I wanted to show to the audience could not become clear so I could not give strong and unambiguous instructions to the dancers. Therefore, at some time I felt that the performance started to create itself as I would not have a hand in it.

TEACHERS’ EVALUATIONS | 2022/23 2nd Period

Angelus Iván – Improvisation, composition, creative work

General notes to the group:
Dear BCDA Contemporary Dance BA Group!

I was tasked to trigger a process that revelates for the participants the complexity of dance creation.

We created movement materials, and recognised consciously their place and direction in space, their tempo and rhythm, and their dynamics as well. I encouraged the group members to create sequences that contain a proportional diversity of spatial, temporal, dynamic contrasts. We realised that all moves, all movement sequences have an abstract and a gestural reading, that can be interpreted as a dramaturgy as well.

After selecting the best individual solutions we improved the quality of them mainly by accenting the existing oppositions and making all aspects more articulated. Sometimes we replaced parts or whole sequences with better ones. Quality overwrote the importance of property.

We payed attention to the importance of left and right inside the movement and on the stage as a consequence of left to right writing in our culture.

After every participant have had a clarified own motive we could go on improving them by changing – slowing down 2 or 4 times and speeding up a max 5 % – the tempo. We learned that the song’s tempo is around 136 bpm that harmonises or not with our “natural feeling” of slow, medium and quick that we documented in a table previously.
The other improvement method was teaching the motive to the others, that made inescapable to understand in depths all aspects of the short sequences.

The process of creation is reflected in the process of the piece (darab, stück) and in the perception of the audience as well.

The process helped everybody in finding different roles in the creative process, showed us what are we strong in, what we need to develop in, and in what we must ask for help.

The process was different from my previous ones. It was not easier, but it was more conscious, and much more efficient as a consequence.

It became quite obvious that the process, the method determines the outcome. The result is a print of the process. The character of the piece is a consequence of the method.

The main challenge is to find the important and the secondary little things that result a consistent whole in the artist and in the audience.

I know, this is rather a summary than a feedback, but I think you can „compare” your results to the program I proposed better than I could.
I still will try to add personal feed back and will be open for dialogues.

Happy New Year

A minőség felülírta a tulajdon fontosságát.
A mű jellege a módszer következménye.

Personal notes:
2022. december. Iván
Furulyás Dóra – Improvisation
General notes to the group:
Dear All! In this period we were working on repeating the same tasks and thereby we had the chance to observe how we are changing when the task doesn’t. We had a fix warming up process led by couple work. I can reflect on your work on what I saw and could observe from the outside. However I think that it is just complementing you personal expriences. Generally I: I found that the group was more tired and exhausted, and often people were missing. Generally II: once we started the class and got engaged with the tasks, dance and movement everyone got involved and gave chance to understand their own movement patterns and everyday relation to dance.
Personal notes:
Fülöp László – Improvisation, composition, creative work
General notes to the group:
First of all I’m gonna try to write about how you are working as a group, and in English – so if I would fail in clarity, sorry for that, but you are always welcome to ask about anything in person if something was left uncertain or unclear. I’ve liked working with you, I think you all truely support each ohers, and that’s super important for your future developpement (!) , even though you are on so many different levels related to your knowlege and abilities but you can help, teach and learn from each others a lot. Don’t be shy to give feedbacks because that’s a real aid to reach your full potencial. There is a lot of potencial in you as a group, more than what you could just imagine now. Support and help, you are all gifted and have to fulfill your roles and potencials in building the future. Thank you for your work and keep it going on, sharp on point, never give up, don’t forget, you form the future, you are the current potencial of the future.
Personal notes:
Everything is there. Keep on working. Try to explore and play about different qualities and roles/personas as a performer, because it is fun, and will be needed in the future.
Péter Petra – Dance Studies
General notes to the group:
Mindenki felkészült a szövegolvasással. Overall, there was focused group work throughout the intensive 3 days. Everyone was prepared with the reading of the texts. To varying degrees, depending on individual skills, effort, will, previous patterns, confidence, etc., but also class participation was essentially characterised by active attention and participation. Several of you asked me how I saw the group work: basically balanced, with only Máté’s presence and inactivity standing out. So, according to my plans, we were able to do what I had planned: both in terms of the curriculum and in terms of the different ways in which we expressed ourselves.
Personal notes:
Réka, igazából a visszajelzésben nagyon pontosan leírtad, amit én is látok veled kapcsolatban: “I have learnt from myself that I tend to be uncertain even in my secure knowledge.” Te tudod, mi tud megerősíteni, hogy hátrahagyd a bizonytalanságot. A gyakorlat biztos jót tesz. Azt kérdezted, ‘Why did you choose this particupar chapter introducing these four choreographers at first?’ Réka, actually, in your feedback you described very accurately what I see about you: “I have learned from myself that I tend to be uncertain even in my secure knowledge.” You know what can confirm you to leave uncertainty behind. Practice must be good for you. You asked me, ‘Why did you choose this particular chapter introducing these four choreographers at first?’ My choice was not the 4 choreographers, but the approach Foster takes in writing about dance history. I definitely wanted to deal with a larger text and not several small ones in the first year. This book seems ideal for that even now.
Joe Alegado, Csasznyi Blanka – Shifting Roots – AML

Réka, you are a good mover. When you get movement into your body, you do really good things with them.

Also, you seem to have more experience in dance and it shows when you approach new movement material. We could see your process while you worked things out in class. It seems you are always searching for a way to understand the material deeply enough, so that you can transform it through your own body. This is good. There were times your movement would leave us breathless because you had transformed what we had given to everybody – into something special and unique.

It is also important to try to capture what the teachers ask of you. So, while you are transforming the movement given to you, make sure it remains true to the original.

Whenever anyone enters into a Shifting Roots class, it takes time to coordinate all the different body parts – especially the hands. We saw that you, at times, struggled activating your turn out from the hip joint. We believe it’s just a matter of time before you are able to understand the timing necessary to suspend on one leg so that you can create enough time to activate your turn out before transitioning to the next movement.

We’ll work more on that, and other things, next time we meet. Overall, good work Reka.

WORKPLAN | 2022/23 3rd Period

Studies
I gladly considered that this period we will have music studies that are really helpful because last period I became more interested in how music and dance work together how music manipulates movement and how it helps the movement to happen. I hope that with the help of these classes, I get a little bit deeper understanding of how music works. I believe that I will be able to find a stronger connection between my movement and music.

Mikó Dávid
In Dávid’s classes, I think I will be able to work on stability, strength and engagement with the movement. Probably, the focus on breathing will also be highlighted, so I could continue building up a more effective way of using my breath.

Tibi/Ildikó néni
Before the break, I felt that I started to find the way of weight shifting in ballet classes, and the proper amount of effort I should use. In this period I would like to develop, but at least not lose these qualities.

Kámea
I aim to focus on music usage and feel group energies are very strong in Kámea’s classes. Therefore, I would like to engage more with the group dancing together besides personal solutions.

In addition, I plan to build up an everyday routine of stretching and strengthening exercises, because I tend to skip both, giving them less importance than they have in reality. But I suppose even a little effort into these fields could result in lots of change in my qualities and in how I feel my body. Our previous works really helped me have a direction, clarifying and understanding more and more what is my goal with my studies.
During the time of the last period, my interest started to move into the field of performing on stage instead of focusing only on the learning process and technical development in dance.

SUMMARY | 2022/23 3rd Period

Az utolsó periódus, amellett, hogy új ismeretekkel gazdagodtunk, pl. aktív nyújtás, ami számomra rendkívül hasznosnak bizonyult, több, korábban már érintett területtel is tudtam foglalkozni, mélyíteni, megismerni, alkalmazni. A periódus felépítéséből adódóan volt alkalom kizárólag a technikai fejlődésre koncentrálni, illetve saját szükségleteinkre koncentrálni. Ilyen például a nap végi levezetés, kivezetés a napi munkából (próbákból különösen).

TEACHERS’ EVALUATIONS | 2022/23 3rd Period

Mizsei Zoltán – Music Studies
General notes to the group:

General notes to the group:

Az osztály egésze jól dolgozó, koncentrált csapat, kisebb egyéni hullámzásokkal! Kiemelt a lelkesedés a látványosabb, nehezebb elemek iránt ( egyensúlyi és támaszhelyzetek az ízületi stabilitás fejlesztésére), illetve a játékosabb feladatok felé.

Personal notes:

Magas szintű figyelem, erős jelenlét, a fizikai erő és a kifinomult testhasználat megfelelő aránya. Erő és mozgásterjedelem együtt, ez kell ide. Remek úton vagy!

Péter Petra – Dance Studies
General notes to the group:
General notes to the group:
A csapat remekül működik.
A passéban tartott lábbal végzett balance gyakorlatot a rúdnál, tökéletesen csinálod. Stabilan állsz, szép tartással, feszítés nélkül, a térded is, a csípőízületi nyitottságodhoz képest jó helyen tartod. A forgásaid is stabilizálódnak , szépülnek.
General notes to the group:
Szépen dolgoztál ezekkel a feladatokkal.

MENTOR’S SUMMARY | 2022

WORKPLAN | 2022/23 4th Period

In general, I aim to build up a more effective morning routine, that helps me to keep up with the rest of the day. I would like to experiment with the previously learnt breathing and stability/mobility exercises to prepare not only my body but also my mental state for work.
Besides, I am still interested in music’s effects on movement, and the different rhythms I can use and I think with Batyu’s classes and the Kilences rehearsals it already will be an important part of the period, but still, I would like to pay attention to this field during individual work as well.

Rhythm and Dance
As in the last period, the connection between music and movement was very highlighted, I am curious if it will affect how I can deal with the following Rhythm and Dance classes.

Graham-technique
In my opinion, the Graham technique has lots of benefits. I think it can help to build up a stronger body awareness through using the spirals of the body. I would like to focus on how my spirals are working, and what are the natural directions of my body. Besides, I am curious how could I find freedom within this very structured dance technique.

Rehearsals
Regarding Nézlek rehearsals, I aim to have better time management and clarity of the structure of the process, which I hope gives more freedom and safety for us as creators and performers.

Our previous works really helped me having a direction, clarifying and understanding more and more what is my goal with my studies.
During the time of the last period my interest started to move into the field of performing on stage instead of focusing only on the learning process and technical development in dance.

SUMMARY | 2022/23 4th Period

TEACHERS’ EVALUATIONS | 2022/23 4th Period

Kulcsár Vajda Enikő – Body
General notes to the group:
Personal notes:
Magas szintű figyelem, erős jelenlét, a fizikai erő és a kifinomult testhasználat megfelelő aránya. Erő és mozgásterjedelem együtt, ez kell ide. Remek úton vagy!
Kováts Tibor – Balett
General notes to the group:
Kedves mindenki! A gyakorlatok sorrendjének a megtanulására új szisztémát alkalmaztunk a hallgatók javaslatára. Ebben a periódusban, kipróbáltam két új elemet.
Personal notes:
Kedves Réka! Csodálatosan dolgozol, fantasztikus , ahogyan építkezel napról napra! Nincs mit mondanom, csak így tovább! 👏Az utolsó periódusban a kis koreo segítségével, fogunk tovább építkezni, muzikalitás, dinamika, tánckészség tekintetében. Hajrá!
Újvári Milán – Body / Movement Culture
General notes to the group:
Fontos lenne megtanulni. Segítek jövőre! Addig is keressetek bátran bármilyen kérdésben.
Personal notes:
Réka! Mit is mondjak.
General notes to the group:
