ANITA KUROLJOVA

WORKPLAN | 2018 September

Find motivation to sit down and revise things i have learned, usually due to fast learning i do not work with the material again. Secondly to further develop my ideas as to what i want to show or say with my performances and projects. To keep myself in contact more as to what happens around me in society, to not distance myself from it.
To physically develop and take care of my back, to pay more detailed attention to it and to keep it well stretched, in order and to strengthen it.
To not give myself in to the idea of being ill or doing something later, to cut the amount of procrastination i do.
My workplan is in my daily routine, to keep my body and mind in order, some things need less attention, for example a weekly sit down.

SUMMARY | 2018 December

In August, in workplan what I wrote to myself (it was bigger than one was done for school) one of my topics was to be honest with myself as an artist and a person. So, to be honest and selfcritical I could say – I failed my workplan and goals. Or, to be more precise It worked first month's but not in the end, when I faced a lot of problems. But as Iam independent person now, for first time in my life, I think it's a big step forward to face problems and at list realize them, now I can work with them. If before I could always avoid them with hope "nobody cares, Iam anyways good", then now I cant say that and I don't think like this anymore. For first time I can really use my knowledge of dance and work so hard as I can/must/do. As I moved to place were professional level of everything higher than in Estonia, I can feel if I do classes, rehearsals or life in wrong way. Before I could do wrong things, but nobody cares coz others does even more worst things.
First monthes in Academy, in my opinion, been successful for me. I went against "periods", tiredness, sickness and so on, as I been very motivated and excited. Then I lost my way. As I liked to say " I had reason" (to be late, to not come, whatever else), now I could face the problem and answer to myself " I had more reasons to still come". I didn't, I will work on it.
Anyways, as I grow like a person and hopefully learn how to "live" on my own way, I will also grow as an artist. I lucky to have some background in dance to learn now how to use it in professional way.

TEACHERS' EVALUATIONS | 2018 December

Angelus Iván:
General notes to the group:
In this semester I had the chance to meet all of you in the three main territories of our school: 1. sharing new information, 2. developing your creativity, 3. developing your social skills. I feel myself and you successful in point one and two, and I have hard time at point 3. with all of you. This is because of the social environment surrounding us. Solving this difficulty is the task itself. The level of cooperation and sincereness is that makes difference in the common success.

My short evaluations will be strict and related to your development related to school requirements:
I will tick Excellent box at who are developing well, basically in harmony with school guidelines, hopefully will reach their goal to become a professional contemporary dancer.
I will sign Satisfactory/Good at those who could make (much) more in their own sake.
I will sign Failed at those who do not live with their possibilities and should change their attitude in order to become more successful or to those who are on the right way to find their own direction that may be out of the school's profile. It can be considered a success too. Failed may mean you have to work on your trajectory out of school or it may mean to stay in school but work on a higher level.

Personal notes:
Dear Anita! You have spent a very successful time here, you could involve your natural talent and you could involve your previous knowledge as well. It was time to meet and face seriously with the first serious difficulties. It is good that you start to understand: you have to find your solutions, anywhere you go you can not escape from your problems. They don't come from the places, but you bring them with you. Work on efficient cooperations with everybody. Know these people around you, and that will help to know yourself better as well. Your upper back and chest and shoulders are a bit reserved. More confidence, more freedom will mobilize them. Find little things to work on and get big daily experiences. Learn to plan and document experiences. Find what you can develop in, and develop a bit day by day. Be more curious on yourself, mates, Budapest, cultural life, … Learn to feel at home anywhere. You are on the best way to become a dancer, appreciate more your circumstances and yourself as well. At the performance your talent was present and hope you felt what you have to work on from January. Wish you patience and success.

Várnagy Kristóf:
General notes to the group:
It is my general note, not only to group A-B, or C but for the whole of the students, that it is a heartwarming how you grew into a good and functioning community. It is great to see you supporting each other.

Personal notes:
You are very good at things that suit your interest, so I would invite you to do more things you don`t like to challenge your taste, and through that expand your vocabulary.

Szegedy-Maszák Zsuzsanna:
General notes to the group:
Great class, everyone seems curious and open. Great exchanges of ideas during class, good class discussions, signs of critical thinking on the part of the students. Very happy with the group.

Personal notes:
Her class participation in class discussion is very much appreciated, she has brought in interesting connections with art and dance, especially in our discussion of kitsch and so-called bad painting.

Köszönöm a munkádat!

Urvi Vora:
General notes to the group:
After my brief, intensive interaction with everyone, I have very much enjoyed reading the diverse essays from all of you – very different approaches, levels and processes. My feedback is focussed on your essay and I hope it helps you think of how to push it forward from here as there is always much more to do.
Good luck with all your future plans and upcoming work in the school! It was wonderful to see all your thoughts turn into something on paper!

Personal notes:
I appreciate the personal reflections made by you and the interesting propositions that you make in your essay. It is of course an age-old understanding that artists are born out of suffering and you have provided your own view on that.

However, it is important to be careful while making such grand generalisations especially when they are about sensitive issues. I agree that problems make us think of solutions but it is tricky to claim that it makes people better artists when there are enough examples of artists who have not themselves suffered but learnt from their lives. In this age, when we are more aware of mental health issues, one must sharpen these ideas taking into account how the future depends on it.

You make some wonderful personal remarks but I encourage you to push it further. In a philosophy paper, the reader needs to see a larger argument coming from the data instead of the data alone so which conclusions can you make from here? What more can the reader know?

Bakó Tamás:
You are a truly gifted mover and well educated dancer. The question in your case is what are the directions and lines of your further development. It feels that you are on a good place but except some of the people your group in general is slow compare to you. Sometimes it bothers you but mostly you work with humble commitment. Still. What perspectives can you put up to yourself and how can you get support from your actual environment to develop appropriate?

You have a clear understanding of the body and movement embedded in the developed awareness of the body and natural agility. Movements forms energy and connections are related and intelligently organized. Logic, coordination, bodily and spatial relationships are understood intuitively. You have an immediate access to the material and a high quality of deliver.

Sometimes you were struggling with health issues. And not getting enough rest.

MENTOR'S SUMMARY | 2018 December

WORKPLAN | 2019 January

To do more individual trainings, for example learning from dancing videos (to improve my dance technic more). Detailed plan about that with my mentor.
To not give up ( to do with full energy classes, my ideas, life). So, Not get bored/tired/sick. To grow up and get experience as independent person in new town. To read or watch more about dance/theater/any art in general.

SUMMARY | 2019 June

End of first year in BCDA.
A group.
I really appreciate and honestly love my classmates. We all are very different in life and dance, but I sow and felt that each of us cared about other. We became friends and shared with each other success or difficulties if it was needed. Looking forward to work more together and see how we will become more independent persons and dancers.
My private life.
Of course there is still some difficultyes and a lot of questions from myself to myself. But since I came to Budapest I also found some answers. Iam learning a lot, Iam taking more care about my mind and body, Iam trying to be responsible for what I do, trying to listen people and not harm them. Its would be easier to just defence myself from opinions and feedbacks, and start to have my own strong opinion about how, what I want and will do. But until Iam student I leave my borders opened, so I can get more information, experience and choose right way when it will be time for that. With all problems what I had until now ( I call them «problems» now, but probably they will not seem like that in a year or two) I became more sensitive, I gave up some old strict opinions and ideas about life and people. I hope it's a good start to understand who Iam as a person and it will help me to know who am I as a dancer. I really do believe that presence on a stage depends from how presentative and cooperative in life, in general situations we are.
Ballet
Yes, I can do better, I can go more far for what I learned in Ballet school. By now it was my clear desision to not go so far. Its not the quality what I need now, its not the quality what I feel like. Ballet school harmed my mind a lot and even tho we don't go now to same goals like there, Its bacame little private drama for me. Iam very thankful for little chances given to me to lead few ballet classes. I really felt I can teach more than do by myself. I tried a bit to take ballet classes more as a « work out» for my body, and of cores I felt very sorry and guilty, as its not a sport but an art. Hopefully I can let go my privious heavy experience and enjoy classical dance in future.
Folk
Yes, yes, yes! I enjoy teacher, quality, rhythm, group energy. I never did this kind of Folk dance before and I found my self very comfortable and curious in learning that now.
Contemporary dance
Even tho I had a lot of experiences before, just now Iam really learning a lot by watching to teachers and schoolmates. Always before I been putting more attention to how strong I can be. And only now I found that in my case « strong» meant: tence, stressful, blocked and so on. Iam opening now new qualityes, new way of thinking about movement and that it can come out not just from hard work of muscles ( sometimes from there also, but it's not the only way). As I wrote in my last summary, I finally sure, that there is no-one perfect. Even if I been « cool» somewhere, it doesn't mean it's time to stop. There is huge possibility to learn more and more, and never again I want to think Iam perfect.
Individual work
I had hard individual time at the beginning, but when I didn't had it few times ( because of rehearsals or sickness) I missed it a lot. This means a lot and says everything about « yes, its important part of studyings!».
Performances
This is important part to see how far you got until now. Time to really enjoy and show to audience what you worked for. We had good pieces to present on a stage, I found myself confident on what iam doing. Sounds funny and wrong, but on days of performances iam always much more responsible for myself and others. Would be nice to improve this quality in morning not late coming to school.

TEACHERS' EVALUATIONS | 2019 June

Thimai Nguyen

General notes to the group:

WHILE DANCING
1-Don’t forget to include the head and the sternum in your dancing.
2-Use the momentum of each part of the body to go from one movement to the other.
3-NO NOISE on the floor: The body should melt while going to the floor, and when you run
the weight should be in the front of the foot.
4-Hands, arms long, alive always, reaching out.
5-Legs, ankles and pelvis release fully. FOR REAL!
6-Take care of every transition in what ever you do.
7-TAKE YOUR TIME- ENJOY- PLAY!! Challenge the public and yourself, tease or choose an
angle to approach the public but it should not be mental. You have to jump in the swimming
pool and warm up the water yourself.
8- STOP THINKING. FEEL.
9- Be connected with the other dancer in the room, use and play with there body rhythm, an
intelligent dancer is someone that feels and sees everything. Let go your instinct.
10-RUNING: Never on your heels, the body should be in a diagonal, and the leg behind HAS
TO BE far away and long. NO SHORT LEGS.

Personal notes:

Beautiful dancer.
You should use and open the light that is inside you! More often. Dancing is playing.
It would make grow your dancing bigger, larger in every direction.
Takes good care with ALL your transitions, link them. Take risk, stop thinking while dancing!!
Use more the momentum of the part of the body to go from one thing to the other, for real!
A real DROP of the body part. Explore that in improvisations.

General notes to the group:

Group A & B were very receptive to everything I bring to class and every task I proposed for them to do. everybody dedicated and worked hard for the workshop. wonderful to see such enthusiasm.

Personale notes:

Very good sence of rhythm and very good undestanding of the mekanics of the task proposed. exelent.

Várnagy Kristóf

General notes to the group:

Dear ppl,

This term, due to holidays, and other scheduling reasons I have had considerably less time with you than during the first semester, so I have less material to work with. However, I wish to reflect on your progress from the first term to the second.

Also, I would like to be transparent about my grading system, and hereby give you an explanation, what means what. So as your teacher I have to grade your work on the following scale: Fail, Satisfactory, Excellent
-fail: you can fail by not attending enough classes, or by not achieving adequate progress
-satisfactory: you are being present, however not sufficiently consistent in your work, or not fully embodying yet the concept of the class
-excellent: you can score excellent if your process is clearly seen in your work

Personale notes:

I feel you are comfortable, but comfort does not lead to progress. So that is no secret, from you I`m expecting much more, to surpass your abilities. I would expect you to be self-driven, I would want you to entertain yourself, and challenge yourself with every chance you get.

Kováts Tibor

General notes to the group:

You start to see more clearly the territories where you have to develop. As everybody, I encourage you to work on your stability, center, communicative attitude in the studio, the stage and daily life. Connect the territories, qualities that you have and the ones you don't. Do not let days, hours, minutes out of your life. Transfer the isolated knowledge from territory to the other: you can be very easily quick but you are very late often. You can be very helpful, empathic responsible and intelligent and closed, irresponsive and irresponsible in other situations. Work patiently but every day and the two years will be enough to start a successful carrier. No hurry.

WORKPLAN | 2019 September

Technical work plan:

My plan is to work every day on being more articulated in my movements. "Articulated" for me means detailed and also being sensible to what exactly happening under my skin when i move. I will try to concentrate on that while dancing on a class + research more deeply at IW time + try to recognize that in my daily activities. I will take articulated body as a big goal while to get closer to that i will need to learn better each muscle of my body, how exactly it works, be precise, learn to relax and contract, learn to care and warm up properly.

Creative work plan:

Next year I would like to explore different possibilities that I can have. Be in different roles, work alone or with people, make research and productions. I want to make as much creative projects as possible.

SUMMARY | 2019 December

In my workplan mainly i had a goal to be more articulated in my movement and learn to take care of my body. Even tho i had an injury and other problems, that was a nice challenge for me to live with that, to take care and still be productive.
I was missing a lot to have more physical training but I tryed as much as I can to compensate it in my individual work time. Also this semester I got a lot of information about anatomy, first of all because of classes in Academy, but also because of going to a physiotherapy or other doctors who could teach me a lot, give advices and make me more conscious about my body.
As creative plan i wanted to work in different possible perspectives. I could work on research with myself, which i couldn't lead anywhere but i still did it. I took part as a dancer in bigger projects and all Academy pieces. I felt very involved and interested in what is happening around. Even when I couldn't dance physically I was there with my mind to not be lost in future plans.
I could do more and develop more as a dancer, but this semester happened to be more about details, feelings, responsibility and learning what i want and what I don't.

TEACHERS' EVALUATIONS | 2019 December

Angelus Iván

General notes to the group:

Dear Students!

The goal of the regular written feed back is to help both teachers and students to get a different perspective on your daily work, to get a wider time frame on your development including where you come from and where you go to. The feed back has three parts: general notes to the group, individual feed back and assessment.

You may not know the table that compares and explains different assessment systems we have shared with your teachers as well:
https://tanc.org.hu/wp/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/grading-system-BCDA.pdf

Concerning the work we have realized together this semester I think that it was efficient by it's regularity, discipline, sincerity. You know yourself how deeply, but I can tell in general you seemed to follow the values and guidelines offered by the school. Some of you were more active others less but nobody ignored and went against these possibilities.
This fact was reflected in your successful presence you performed in the three pieces presented in Trafó, where ALL the participants of each dance could show their maximum, and it's level was pretty high in general.

Congratulations to You, and thanks to your teachers!
Iván

Personale notes:

Dear Anita! This year your work was much more successful. You know how did you do that. Do not forget your actual achievements: your straight attitude, but learn and practice with much wider and with much more detailed spacial, temporal and dynamic scale both in technical and performing situations, as that will enhance your performative richness. The next half year should be concentrated on that. You do not have to make a huge step, THE big step in the next months, but you can create a strong foundation for preparing that with lots of little steps.
Iván

Várnagy Kristóf

General notes to the group:

I am delighted with the work of the class, both on the individual and on the group level. This first half of the year has been characterized by focused, intelligent work. You all had different struggles. Some, on the physical, some on the mental&spiritual plane. But I appreciate your hard work and resilience, how you faced your problems and insisted on solving them. Therefore, I am going to award the whole class with excellent grades. Each one of you deserved it, but for different reasons: some for better technique, some for the systematic, consistent, persistence work. I am giving you all the trust, that it will be a stepping stone into the second half of the year, and that you keep up the spirit for the second part of the season. Stay focused on your goals, stay sharp.

Personale notes:

My feedback is somewhat similar to the one from last year. Although in many ways, you have made quite an improvement. You have always been solid at ballet, it is not there where I can really see your growth, but on the works on stage. I feel that you are finding good grounds, that affects all aspects of your work. I am still inviting you to bring your "voice" your interpretation, your implementation into ballet class.

Bakó Tamás

Although many times you were struggling with health issues in the last period your practice started to become more comprehensive. And begun to include as much of unlearning as learning it again or learning it different.
I sense more patience toward yourself and more acceptance about taking time with the understanding of what you need as a dancer in the future.
You have an immediate access to the material of the class and a high quality of deliver it. The movements and forms feels full, investigated and controlled. Relationships of the body parts according to the whole, directions of the movements and their spatial relationships are connected and intelligently organised. Your skills and potentials are present investigated and carried through.
Keep on going!

WORKPLAN | 2020 January

Partially I would like to keep plan of first semester. I can still work every day on details in each movement, articulations, healthy body. Every day in training, and in private life as well.
As extra i will think of what is the goal of each separate training and rehearsal. What i can add to that from myself? How i can stay curious every day?
Also I want to take more responsibilities for new projects or ideas.

SUMMARY | 2020 June

End of second year in BCDA. This year was important for me from all different perspectives. All the good, difficult and uncertain moments gave me a time to be honest and critical towards myself. School work, Quarantine and searching for the next year plans gave me a field to think of what I honestly want for my future and what kinda dancer I could be. For example it is clear that I am not a good improviser. I am not as creative as I would wish to be. Mostly I can relate only to a clear tasks which are related to a human being and connection between them. If someone would ask me to move with the image of water, i would feel like “No way, I am not a water, I can't be water”. I am too realistic to fulfill this task and I always feel stupid or lying to myself and others if I try to be a water (for example). But I think it is not bad to realize it. If I can try to be successful in other direction why lie. Even tho, I don't give up on my creativity yet. I feel for me it would be the best for now to go for the technical movement, go for sensible and sincere, go for composing the movement. My main goal was to develop clarity and go for articulated movement. It is still something unreachable for me but I could learn something from the direction I had. Now I understand It was not a movement I actually wanted to go for, but a way of thinking. From Batyu we heard many times “Don't copy, But understand”. I think I am the one who could always copy easily. But clarity of each movement and its sharpness comes first of all from its understanding. I never could find connection in my head that it is not just a physical activity what I do, but it's something i should constantly digest and go deeper to be able to use it as a precise knowledge, not a wavy idea. With this purpose in the quarantine time I didn't go for the new online classes from new teachers. I was curious about what I can remember from what I learned already from teachers. Not the exact exercises, but what are the roots, principles, guidelines. How I can make my own class in the situation of quarantine when I am alone and for example cant use Youtube. It was very important and interesting experience. I know it doesn't sound like critical and proper feedback, but I enjoyed being on stage this year so much! When I look back to our Trafo performance, Open act, (also my experience of giving light for Tijen piece in My) I feel those were the ones I simply enjoyed a lot. Being there, dancing together, having helpful community around. This year we could reach great level of communication in the group. It was clear, helpful and critical when it was needed. I could also enjoy a lot my coordination while moving, awareness of what around. We experienced it already last year, also this year in Mr.Set and Mrs.Free. I always felt happy to play the game of moving in space, to stay curious, to find new opportunities, to keep in mind few tasks. It is a really nice practice which I always enjoyed as a kid. This year I made some little steps towards connecting my movement with my personality, opened up a bit more and hopefully got to a good direction.

TEACHERS' EVALUATIONS | 2020 June

Farkas Zoltán

General notes to the group:

Minden egyes tanulónál a fegyelem, az akarás, odaadás, odafigyelés van. Ezzel nem kellett foglalkozni. Ennek eredményeképpen a tanult táncok ritmusában, stílusában, egységében, tánc típusában érthetőek, helyén vannak és stílusosan vannak eltáncolva. Mindenki a saját szintjének megfelelően teljesít (maximálisan). Ehhez ők is kellettek.

General notes to the group:

Dear Students! I think your group as a group could build up itself and you reached a very high level of cooperation by the end of the year: You have learned a lot from each other, You helped each other, You accepted and supported each other. The life was calm and moderated, even tempered. That is good for the calm development, accumulation. you did it and learned from it. The same time I think that you haven't gone really close to each other, didn't lived big cathartic moments together, you tolerated and respected each other so much that you were allowed to do anything, may be nobody would warn the other if anything happened. May be I am wrong and it happened time to time, just I remained out of those exciting, red-hot flaming situations, so valuable for an artist. May be you had them somewhere else and not in the school. The life in school was free from the active ignorance of the rules of cooperation, and active adversary actions. I gave more space and time to mistakes and omissions, misunderstandings, and it was very much up to you if you lived with certain possibilities or you missed to profit from them. I think it was a good strategy. Who and when wanted, to do something could learn from it, and who didn't want or couldn't was allowed to loose that possibilitiy. It's very good to know that (almost) all of you seem to find a good solution for the next year, I think we could encourage and help you. With the 7 of you we have to speak about the next year's common tasks and possibilities. I will be strict about my evaluations.I think you ALL developed a LOT, and you ALL can SUCCESSFULLY further develop. When I evaluate your development satisfactory or excellent I make a difference of how far you could get if you did everything possible. Especially with last year students I also wished to relate your actual state to an external general level of a beginner professional dancer.

Personale notes:

I think we reached to understand together that you are on a very good way to a very successful dancer's life, but you should start to practice, create more efficiently, Concentrating on details, challenge yourself MUCH more, find joy in this process

Mikó Dávid

General notes to the group:

This special period was a great opportunity to develop your own working methods. As you can see, circumstances can change quickly, so it is worthwhile to create a system in which your professional life can remain constant. The individual work you further develop and extend into other areas of your life will make you independent of world conditions. Thats the true power and freedom when you draw your path with your own hands … and it's persistent, continuous, never-ending work. Enjoy the flow!

Personale notes:

She didn't take my workshop in this year…
